The Wisdom of the Couch
What a Couch Can Teach Us About Therapy
When I first started dreaming up my private practice, I jokingly thought about calling it KK’s Cozy Couch Counselling. It still makes me giggle. There’s something so wonderfully ordinary about a couch — soft edges, a place to sink in, an invitation to stop bracing and simply be.
I didn’t end up using that name, but the spirit of it has stayed with me. A couch holds stories, tears, laughter, long pauses. It’s a witness to the slow work of being human. It doesn’t rush or judge. It just waits — and welcomes.
Therapy, for me, feels a lot like that. It’s less about “fixing” and more about creating a space soft enough for the truth to emerge. The body settles. The nervous system starts to trust. And bit by bit, something unfolds — a new awareness, a release, a small but significant shift.
Whether we meet virtually or in person (maybe one day!), I try to bring that same sense of cozy spaciousness into the room. The kind where you can breathe, take your shoes off metaphorically, and stay a while. Because the pace of healing isn’t fast; it’s rhythmic. And the heart, much like a good couch, responds best when there’s room to rest.
